The best results for top water lures will come from water that’s 5 feet or less near some kind of structure. example (weed beds, brush, land-points etc.) Buzz baits are one of the best baits for a fun catch. The bass will literally attack them out of no where. A good one for the bigger bass too. They’re very productive, especially in late spring at the end of the spawn. They’re good for fishing allot of water in a short time.

"When you put a frog on the mat, bass don't know if it's a mouse, a baitfish flipping around or a black bird. A lot of times, the frog imitates a number of things, not just a frog," says professional bass angler Gary Dobyns, the all-time leading money winner in the West. This often requires fine-tuning the action of the plug to coax non-feeding fish into striking. Hit the right combination and you’ll be rewarded with some awesome strikes. The style of topwater plug determines the sounds and vibrations it will emit. For example, round, cigar-shaped lures — coveted for their side-to-side “walk-the-dog” action emit a softer sound, compared to the loud popping sound made by topwater plugs with cupped or slanted heads. As a very general rule, the latter styles rely more on their sound to attract fish, whereas the ones with rounded heads require more action and finesse to produce.

Now comes another tip for topwater fishing. Most anglers will set the hook to early on a topwater bait because of being a visual type of fishing. The excitement of seeing a bass blow up on a surface bait is such a rush that you sometimes get so excited you set the hook to soon!
