Top Water Lures

Top Water lures. Now, of course top water lures such as buzz baits, poppers, and surface plugs are great for shallow water. The best results for top water lures will come from water that’s 5 feet or less near some kind of structure. example (weed beds, brush, land-points etc.) Buzz baits are one of the best baits for a fun catch. The bass will literally attack them out of no where. A good one for the bigger bass too. They’re very productive, especially in late spring at the end of the spawn. They’re good for fishing allot of water in a short time.

"When you put a frog on the mat, bass don't know if it's a mouse, a baitfish flipping around or a black bird. A lot of times, the frog imitates a number of things, not just a frog," says professional bass angler Gary Dobyns, the all-time leading money winner in the West. "I've seen water snakes eaten when they are on top of a mat. Bass are ferocious predators. They just eat whatever moves on top of that mat and figure out what it is later. Half the time they don't know what it is. Twice, I've seen bass try to eat full-grown coots. They didn't get them, but they sure tried".

The secret to catching more and bigger fish on topwater plugs is really pretty simple: you’ve got to make the lure look alive. This often requires fine-tuning the action of the plug to coax non-feeding fish into striking. Hit the right combination and you’ll be rewarded with some awesome strikes. The style of topwater plug determines the sounds and vibrations it will emit. For example, round, cigar-shaped lures — coveted for their side-to-side “walk-the-dog” action emit a softer sound, compared to the loud popping sound made by topwater plugs with cupped or slanted heads. As a very general rule, the latter styles rely more on their sound to attract fish, whereas the ones with rounded heads require more action and finesse to produce.

Now comes another tip for topwater fishing. Most anglers will set the hook to early on a topwater bait because of being a visual type of fishing. The excitement of seeing a bass blow up on a surface bait is such a rush that you sometimes get so excited you set the hook to soon! If you remember this tip I'm about to share with you, you'll find that you will probably catch more surface fish than you ever did before. The key is to "Confirm the Pressure" of the bass before you set the hook. This can make all the difference in the world, believe me. Let the bass take the bait and draw the slack out of your line causing a straight pressure between you and the fish. Once you FEEL the bass on the line, then set the hook. That's all there is to it! In sharing this article with you, I hope that you will catch more fish and learn to be more confident with your baits. Don't over work your baits and you will become much more successful when it comes to increasing your numbers in catching bass. I hope this will help the many anglers that have sent me emails with questions concerning topwater fishing as well as any angler that loves the sport of bass fishing.
